These ‘seniorpreneurs’ have launched a range of sweet potato cookies that are a pure delight
Off Our Rocker Sweet Potato Cookies may be touted as “good for you,” but the biggest draw is the taste. The variety of places where they are sold, which includes cafes, specialty food stores, farm stands, and the Boston Skating Club, speaks to their wide appeal. A cross between a morning glory muffin and a naturally sweet and moist whole-grain cookie, the two-ounce concoctions are a delicious indulgence.
The eight cookie flavors, in addition to fresh sweet potato, contain almond flour, oats and maple syrup. It’s the unique ingredients added that give them their individual distinction. It’s cranberries and cinnamon in Sweetie Pie, cocoa in Sweet Rockin’ Love, peanut butter in Sweet Nuttin. The Sweet Envy cookie contains moringa – from the moringa tree native to India. It is perhaps the single ingredient “preacher” for its apparent medical goodness. The eight flavors fall into three profiles: Peanut Butter, Cocoa, and Cinnamon. All are gluten-free and plant-based, individually wrapped, and should be stored in the refrigerator.
Off Our Rocker was started by Nanci Gelb of Weston and Terri Tsagaris of Natick – two “seniorpreneurs”, as they call themselves. The two became fast friends while running a total of seven marathons for the Dana-Farber Cancer Institute and the Children’s Room, a bereavement support service. Gelb has a background in marketing and development and Tsagaris is a lawyer and served on Wellesley’s Select Board for six years.
After receiving praise for the homemade cookies they gave out at fundraisers, and eventually a suggestion from Gelb’s daughter-in-law to “go vegan,” they began to “build our idea, while helping the others,” says Gelb. Cookies come out of the oven at CommonWealth Kitchen in Dorchester, a non-profit incubator with communal kitchen.
Their product line also includes two flavors of Hippie Cratic Oats granola, sweetened only with maple syrup. If your best friend is a dog, there’s also a range of sweet potato cookies you can chomp down together. Off Our Rocker cookies are available at over 14 local stores and restaurants, including Picnic & Pantry in Somerville, Good Health Natural Foods in Quincy, Kwench Juice Café in Boston, Tilly & Salvy in Natick, American Provisions in Dorchester, and Garden Cafe in Brigham and Women’s Hospital.
