Slices of cake incite nostalgia at Simply Desserts in Fremont

Last week my son flushed a bag down the toilet while I was cooking dinner. After failing to retrieve the lost toy with a coat hanger, I gave up – and decided to go get some cake.

The place: Simply desserts3421 Fremont Ave North

What is offered: Slice cake (usually $6 each) reminiscent of the best version of what a homemade layer cake can be.

The verdict: The slice of birthday cake is one of my favorites: it’s reminiscent of funfetti, but without the artificial taste. Plus, a much better texture and more delicious frosting.

  • I also love the dark chocolate and white chocolate cake, which is sprinkled with chocolate chunks that give a big burst of flavor while being less heavy than a straight slice of chocolate ganache.
  • (The chocolate truffle cake, however, is pretty good too.)
  • There are at least a dozen cakes to choose from each day, so you’re sure to find something you’ll like – unless you’re not a cake fan, in which case I just can’t figure it out.

To note: Simply Desserts only accepts cash and checks, but there is an ATM on a nearby block.

  • That’s about the only reason I can be found carrying my checkbook with me on walks around the neighborhood — you know, to be ready for a chance cake.
  • The shop is closed on Mondays.
