Closure of Kimberly’s Homemade Ice Cream in Rockford
ROCKFORD — A Midtown Rockford business specializing in homemade ice cream, yogurt, paninis and wraps has closed permanently.
Kimberly’s Homemade Ice Cream & More, 528 Seventh St., has closed for the past two weeks, according to Downtown district President Ronn Mooney.
“You hate to see a small business like that disappear,” Mooney said. “They invested money in the equipment needed to make ice cream. It’s a shame to see that the company did not succeed. It’s disappointing.”
Kimberly’s Homemade Ice Cream & More owner Luis Tafolla was not immediately available for comment. The building that housed the business is owned by Zion Development Corporation.
The closure follows Guler Appliance Company’s decision to leave the Midtown District and move to 4435 E. State St. in April after operating for 86 years at 227 Seventh St.
However, the Midtown area has recently seen some commercial growth.
Last year, Ernie’s Midtown Pub opened on Fifth Avenue. The Spot Cafe recently reopened under new management on Seventh Street and Inscape Collective, a business specializing in duty-free imported goods, opened in the same block as the former Guler store.
“I really hope to see more businesses succeed here,” said Kevin Spaw, manager of Katie’s Cup, 502 Seventh St. “We have our loyal customer base and they keep us going. We’ve been here almost 10 years, so we are established and everyone who knows who we are is coming back.
